Pariah: Are They That Different?
2011 Sundance film festival presented a number of films concerning homosexuality and the search of oneself. One of such movies is Pariah, which won an award at the festival. The film deals with a young girl who tries to find her path in spite of conventions promulgated by her conservative family.
Nowadays the issues of homosexuality, homophobia are heavily discussed in various academic writings (even in best essay writing like with essay and term papers). Even now, in the XXI century homosexual people remain pariahs who need to struggle for their love and have to work twice harder to become a success. Dee Rees tells a story about a shy girl, Alike (Adepero Oduye) who feels affection to her female friend and is about to understand that the conventions of the world she lives in are not for her. She is fascinated by the new world of progressive youth and freedom.
Oduye has created a terrific image of the sensitive but brave soul. The young actress manages to act out the whole range of feelings, fear, inclinations which a teenager can experience when searching for the way to the adult world. Of course, the film is about growing up, dreaming and making new friends. Pariah is about rebel and obedience. Of course, the movie is about love and all of its manifestations. It is not surprising that the film won Excellence in Cinematography Award (U.S. Dramatic) at 2011 Sundance film festival.
